Thoughts on DHEA?

Anyone familiar with DHEA? I’ve been reading about as a final option for older women. I can’t say I like being considered older, but I guess at 35 when it comes to the baby game, I am. I understand DHEA is a male hormone that’s available over the counter. And some women have taken it (exactly why I’m not sure) and the result has been a drastic lowering of the follical stimulating hormones. That’s my problem, my fsh is too high. My ovaries are prematurely acting as if I were older. I asked my doctor about it, and she says that even though DHEA is otc she hopes whe will let me take the medication with her supervision, and I think I will. Does anyone have any more to say about DHEA, good or bad? I think it’s worth a try before I consider more drastic measures such as ivf.

Yes, of course, you can still use your own eggs if you qualify for DHEA. Why else would you want to take it? You, however, should not take it on your own. Speak to your fertility doctor about it first or, alternatively, you can call us at 212-994 4400 for a telephone consultation.
Dosages vary with weight, but most of our patients receive 25mg TID. And we never use over the counter DHEA.

i live in a third world country and fortunately we have access to ivf but being over 40 and after trying ivf 3 times i want to try DHEA be4 i try ivf AGAIN how can i describe it to my healthcare provider and what is it commonly known as ?

Dr. Gleicher, if you see this message, please inform me of the following:

Do you prescribe DHEA to patients over 40 who do not have elevated FSH but a low antral follicle count? For instance, I just turned 41, (have had 2 IVF's with one chemical pregnancy), my FSH is always 7 or lower on day 3. However, I have only a 6-7 antral follicle count.

Is it a must that your patients have elevated FSH to get DHEA treatment? Or would someone such as I qualify?
