On npr I heard a new study where they were able to grow new ovarian eggs in mice! That shouldn't be possible for mammals (like us!) and it may mean there is a way to trigger the growth of new eggs in women who seemingly have run out. I found this article in the NY times online;

Here's another version of the same story.

So I'm trying to understand this... so they say a woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. So is this studying saying that they found a way to produce more? Sure seems to sound that way.
I guess I could have born ten years too early! Story of my life. |

So forgive me if I'm slow, but does all this mean that this might reverse the rule, that once you run out of eggs, you can not produce any more? In other words, it may be possible for women to produce more eggs than they were born with? ???

I think it's time that we begin to seriously explore the possiblities of stem cells. Would we have the same concerns with the use of blood or other organ donations? Those who have a problem with stem cells can choose not to use any of the advances that come from them. However I don't think they have the right or authority to decide others can make use of them.
